Events & Seminars

There are several weekly seminars and social events that run during the academic year.

  • The weekly Astrophysics Seminars is jointly hosted by UC San Diego Astronomy/Physics Program, CASS, and San Diego State University (SDSU). Seminars feature world-class astrophysicists speaking on current topics of astronomy & astrophysics research. Presentations are aimed at the graduate and post-graduate level, but are open to the general public. Due to Covid this 2021-2022 we will be continuing our joint online seminar series. Astrophysics Seminar is scheduled for Fridays at 3-4pm, with an occasional alternative slot at 12pm on Fridays to offer amenable time zones in Europe.

The Journal Club is crafted to be a very informal and friendly environment where graduate students can present talks on any subject of interest to them, be it a recent journal paper, their own research work, or any topic. Everyone is welcome to attend.

  • Department of Physics Colloquium frequently features talks related to astronomy and astrophysics on Thursdays 4-5pm, as recommended for attendance for emersion into broader Physics topics. Physics colloquium are aimed at graduate-level to any Physicist, regardless of subfield.

  • BASH (Balcony Astronomy Social Hour) is a Friday 4pm informal social hour that occurs on the SERF balony. Faculty, researcher, postdocs, and graduate students are welcome to attend. During COVID19 BASH has been occurring monthly via Zoom.
